Where to Shop

For gourmet to everyday items, this post is intended to assist with acquiring everything on your shopping list at the best price and in one stop. Over the years a number of gourmet shops has made its presence to our shores making those hard to get items easily available. For those cooking & baking fanatics out there I am sure you will agree with me that it was like a jackpot knowing that these items are now readily available. 

I will provide some stores/groceries along with where items that can be purchased at the most reasonable costs locally. 

Sav-A-Lot Food Stores
There are two locations in Trinidad one located on the Eastern Maid Rd. San Juan next to American Stores. This grocery I begun shopping at probably for the past 3-4 years, they offer a variety of items you would usually find in the high end local groceries different brands but at a cheaper cost. 

 For baking I love to visit them as they have a variety of items to choose from (ready made cake mixes, dark and white chocolate chips, puddings, coconut flakes and much more). Their frozen section has some reasonably priced items which one can use to turn  regular meal into a gourmet for those special occasions (Garlic and Sour Dough Breads, Ezekiel Bread used in my French Toast Recipe, English Muffins also available in 7 Grain). 

 They offer a selection of Ice-Cream brands Crown Creamery Ice creams at just $39.99 TT (1.5 Quart/48oz), ice  cream toppings (hotfudge, caramel and sprinkles). On my next visit I will gather the exact prices and post for some of the items listed here. 

 For the health fanatics out there they recently introduced a gluten free section which also seems interesting. I have tried the pancake mix which the kids love, so will also share some of those items and costs as well. 




Peppercorns
Be sure that you're not in a rush when visiting this store and that you walked prepared to spend as the variety of items available seems limitless. For gourmet desserts they offer brands like Godiva, Phillsbury and Ghirardelli. 

 Their frozen section has a selection meats, seafood and breads. Their in store bakery provides freshly baked goods that can be turned into fabulous appetizers.

This was done for Easter 2015 as treats for nieces and nephews, using a "Classic Spritz" recipe I discovered on wilton.com. However, any cookie recipe of your choice can be substituted and decorated for the same finish.  Recipe: Makes 7-8 dozens Ingredients: 1 1/2 tsp Clear Vanilla Extract (Dark Extract can be substituted)  3 1/2 Cups All Purpose Flour 1 Teaspoon Baking Powder 1 1/2 Cups Butter 1 Cup Granulated Sugar 1 Egg 2 Tablespoons Milk  Instructions:  Step 1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Frostings & Decorations

Chocolate Glaze The finishing touches can make or break your perfect dessert. I am not a specialist on frosting or fondant but in trying some recipes I have found a few good frosting recipes.  This chocolate glaze is taken from a "Taste of Home" dessert cookbook. It is simple and doesn't involve melting of chocolate chips which I know can be a hit and miss at times for some people. It has certainly happened to me on a few occasions and is dependent on the brand of chocolate chips used for melting.  Tips for melting chocolate chips will be given in a further post. Wedding Favors Made Simple Jordan almonds, assorted colours Favor Tins 1/8 " Reel of Ribbon/s of desired colour Instructions: Separate Jordan Almonds into bowls according to colours, if you intend to use a mixture of colours just place almonds into a bowl. Using approximately 6 Jordan Almonds place into favor tin then carefully place lid to cover. Depending on the size of the tin you choose you may want to add more Jordan Almonds. Cut about 5-6 " of ribbon and place around rim of tin, make a small bow pulling tight to ensure it is held in place. Below is an image to show how simple this idea is and can cut costs when having a wedding or any other function.
